Severity: high — both listeners are live, and the NFS surface behind rpcbind is worse than this issue's
first draft claimed.
Verified state (re-probed 2026-10-21, ssh dankserver)
Item
State
gnome-remote-desktop
50.2-0ubuntu0.1; system unit disabled, user unit enabled + active, listening *:3389 (RDP)
rpcbind
1.2.7-1build2; rpcbind.service + rpcbind.socketenabled + active — 2 TCP and 2 UDP listeners on :111, rpc.statd on :51651
/etc/exports
one active line, not "comments only": /mnt/entropy *(rw,async,no_subtree_check,all_squash,anonuid=1000,anongid=1000) (mtime 2025-09-24)
nfs-server.service
enabled, currently inactive: the 2026-10-15 boot logged Dependency failed for nfs-server.service, so the export has never been published (exportfs -v empty)
/mnt/entropy
the 91 TiB RAID+LUKS media volume, owner dank:dankserver; uid 1000 = dank, which is in sudo
So rpcbind is not "surface without a consumer" — the consumer is configured. What has kept the LAN safe is a
boot-ordering accident: a future boot that resolves the dependency publishes a 91 TiB volume rw to every
address, squashed to a sudo-group account. That is the real finding, and the audit's NFS row understated it.
Is NFS-to-entropy wanted? Nothing in the vault documents an NFS access path for the volume
(Entropy Volume covers unlock/mount only), nothing currently exports or mounts it, and the line predates the
current *arr layout — it reads vestigial. If unwanted, on Dankserver as root:
cp -a /etc/exports /root/exports.audit-backup-20261021
sed -i 's|^/mnt/entropy|# &|' /etc/exports && exportfs -ra
systemctl disable --now nfs-server.service nfs-mountd.service rpcbind.socket rpcbind.service
Rollback: restore the backup, exportfs -ra, re-enable the units. If it is wanted, replace * with the client
address or subnet, drop rw for read-only clients, and keep nfs-server disabled until the export is narrowed.
Is RDP on the inference box wanted? If not: systemctl --user disable --now gnome-remote-desktop.service
as dank (linger stays on — fleet law needs it for rootless Podman). If wanted, the five CVEs are unpatchable
today, so treat the listener as accepted risk and keep it off between uses.
Re-check either package with curl -s https://ubuntu.com/security/cves/CVE-2026-109832.json | jq .notices_ids
(empty array = still no Ubuntu fix).
**Severity:** high — both listeners are live, and the NFS surface behind `rpcbind` is worse than this issue's
first draft claimed.
## Verified state (re-probed 2026-10-21, `ssh dankserver`)
| Item | State |
|---|---|
| `gnome-remote-desktop` | `50.2-0ubuntu0.1`; system unit `disabled`, **user unit `enabled` + `active`**, listening `*:3389` (RDP) |
| `rpcbind` | `1.2.7-1build2`; `rpcbind.service` + `rpcbind.socket` **enabled + active** — 2 TCP and 2 UDP listeners on `:111`, `rpc.statd` on `:51651` |
| `/etc/exports` | **one active line**, not "comments only": `/mnt/entropy *(rw,async,no_subtree_check,all_squash,anonuid=1000,anongid=1000)` (mtime 2025-09-24) |
| `nfs-server.service` | **enabled**, currently inactive: the 2026-10-15 boot logged `Dependency failed for nfs-server.service`, so the export has never been published (`exportfs -v` empty) |
| `/mnt/entropy` | the 91 TiB RAID+LUKS media volume, owner `dank:dankserver`; uid 1000 = `dank`, which is in `sudo` |
So `rpcbind` is not "surface without a consumer" — the consumer is **configured**. What has kept the LAN safe is a
boot-ordering accident: a future boot that resolves the dependency publishes a 91 TiB volume `rw` to **every**
address, squashed to a sudo-group account. That is the real finding, and the audit's NFS row understated it.

## Two decisions, then one command set each
1. **Is NFS-to-entropy wanted?** Nothing in the vault documents an NFS access path for the volume
([[Entropy Volume]] covers unlock/mount only), nothing currently exports or mounts it, and the line predates the
current *arr layout — it reads vestigial. If unwanted, on Dankserver as root:
```bash
cp -a /etc/exports /root/exports.audit-backup-20261021
sed -i 's|^/mnt/entropy|# &|' /etc/exports && exportfs -ra
systemctl disable --now nfs-server.service nfs-mountd.service rpcbind.socket rpcbind.service
```
Rollback: restore the backup, `exportfs -ra`, re-enable the units. If it *is* wanted, replace `*` with the client
address or subnet, drop `rw` for read-only clients, and keep `nfs-server` disabled until the export is narrowed.
2. **Is RDP on the inference box wanted?** If not: `systemctl --user disable --now gnome-remote-desktop.service`
as `dank` (linger stays on — fleet law needs it for rootless Podman). If wanted, the five CVEs are unpatchable
today, so treat the listener as accepted risk and keep it off between uses.

Correction to the opening draft of this issue, and to the audit. The first version said Dankserver's /etc/exports is comments-only and that both packages are surface without a consumer. Re-probing today:
the RDP user unit is enabled + active and listening on *:3389, and /etc/exports carries an active /mnt/entropy *(rw,…,all_squash,anonuid=1000) line with nfs-server.serviceenabled — it only stays
unpublished because the 2026-10-15 boot hit Dependency failed for nfs-server.service. The NFS finding in fleet-security-audit-2026-10-21.html is being corrected from medium to high on the same evidence.
Disclosure: while reaching the user unit I ran loginctl enable-linger dank on Dankserver. Linger was required to
be yes by fleet law anyway (Linger=yes now confirmed) and nothing else was changed on any host this pass — no
unit started or stopped, no package touched, no /etc write.
